Building Future Engineers
At The Coach Sarna League, we have always believed a coach's job is to build more than athletes.
The same teamwork, problem solving and confidence our kids learn on the field can be built at a table covered in bricks, or in front of a laptop. That belief is the heart of our STEM program.
Our LEGO Master Builder Series
Our STEM story began in 2022, when a grant from Phillips 66 gave us everything we needed to launch an engineering league built on LEGO bricks.
In February 2023 we opened our first season, the STEM Engineering League, on Saturday mornings in Benicia at Northgate's family building on Lake Herman Road. Students worked in teams of three to four, took on a new engineering challenge each week, and finished the season with a championship sponsored by Phillips 66.
The series grew every year. Our second season in 2024 brought in 78 young engineers in grades 5 through 9, and our winning teams earned a trip to the LEGOLAND Discovery Center.
Our third annual season in 2025 opened to grades 4 through 9, welcomed students from partner schools including Caliber ChangeMakers Academy, and crowned its champions with Phillips 66 championship rings. In all, close to 200 students have built, tested and competed with us.
True to our mission, cost never kept a child out. Close to 80 percent of our LEGO league families took part on a scholarship, funded in part by our volunteers working professional stadium events.
What Comes Next: AI Bootcamps
Our next chapter moves from building bricks to artificial intelligence. Kids are already using AI every day, and most parents are still catching up.
Our new AI Bootcamp series, presented by The Coach Sarna League STEM and Iron Cam, puts parents and kids side by side to learn these tools together, safely and with purpose.
What: AI Family Bootcamp, two hours, hands on
When: Tuesday, October 6, 2026, 6:00 to 8:00 PM (doors open 5:45)
Where: St. Patrick St. Vincent High School, Vallejo
Who: Families, ages 8 and up, with a parent or guardian attending
Cost: $25 per person
Bring: A charged laptop, one per person if you can
Every family builds three real things that night: a family assistant, a game or project of their own, and a business idea with a name, a price and a flyer.
Families also leave with a signed family AI safety agreement, the Iron Cam prompt pack and starter e-book, and the slides to take home.
